May Update

It has been a busy few months at Stoneham Bakehouse, with much happening. We’ve been baking, incorporating and further spreading the community bread message. Read our update to find out more.

bakingWe’re very pleased to announce that Stoneham Bakehouse has incorporated and now are a Community Interest Company. It’s the next step on our journey to establishing ourselves as a fully functioning community supported bakery in the Poets’ Corner area of Hove. As a CIC we are commited to providing bread, breadmaking and volunteer opportunities to the residents of the local area. As we grow, we’ll be able to use our surplus to help deliver these commitments through subsidised opportunities.

We’re continuing to have a pick up point for our bread atΒ The Hive, with ordered breads able to be collected between 12 and 1pm on alternate Saturdays, as well as on Fridays 3-4pm.Β  We’llΒ be baking pain de campagne (sourdough), seeded malthouse and lightΒ rye loaves every bake, with bagels and the #fridaybun available on Fridays.Β  If you’re interested in buying bread from us then we’ll have an order form in the Hive, or you can email orders to us on orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk. To see when we’re baking, and what you can order, you can visit our buy bread page.

After the success of our Seeded Malthouse loaf to accompany their soup, The Hive has updated their menu and is featuring our bagels on their Summer Menu.

Hove Farmers market poster Sat May16As you may have seen, we’ll be having a stall at the inaugral Hove Farmers’ Market on the 16th May. This is a great opportunity to get our bread to more of the community, and talk about the project to people. We’ll be using Pizzaface’s oven, and will bake to order as normal, as well as baking a number of loaves for the Farmers’ Market.

Do come along and say hello, try some of our bread, and maybe buy a loaf.

Real Bread Week

At Stoneham Bakehouse we’re committed to producing real bread; that is bread without the addition or use of processing aids or other artificial additives. We use organic flour from Shipton Mill in Gloucestershire and buy many of our ingredients from Infinity Foods to ensure they are ethically produced. We very much support the work of the Real Bread Campaign; part of the charity Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming. The Real Bread Campaign fights for better bread in Britain. It’s mantra is “We want everyone to have the chance to choose Real Bread, and we at Stoneham Bakehouse share this aim.

real bread weekTo this end we will be holding a number of events during Real Bread Week (9-15 May). On Tuesday 12th May we’ll be running an Everyday Bread workshop at Hungry Monkey on Stoneham Road. In this workshop we’ll look at basic breadmaking techniques, and simple recipes for baking everyday bread. the session will take you through the kneading, fermenting and proving processes, and give tips to help you bake a successful loaf each time. Suitable for beginnners or those who have baked a bit of bread at home; we’ll make two doughs during the workshop, producing different loaves and rolls to eat and take home. A light lunch will be provided to accompany the bread we’ll make. You will also receive copies of the recipes to take home.

The workshop will run on 12th May between 10am and 2pm. It will be held at Hungry Monkey on Stoneham Road, and places wil cost Β£50 with the fee including a donation to the Real Bread Campaign. Buns & Bread for Sale

iced bunWe’ll be baking both Friday and Saturday this week, with the return of the iced bun on Friday afternoon. Having spoken to older residents about the Clark’s Bakery on Stoneham Road, I’ve discovered that one of the most popular breads was the iced bun. An English classic, the iced bun is now available to people of all ages on a Friday. Check out the Buy Bread page to see what else we’re baking and how you can order.
