January News Update
With the start of 2015 we have taken a number of smallΒ steps towards Stoneham Bakehouse establishing itself as a community supported bakery in the Poets’ Corner area of Hove. Read on to find out more.
The very kind people at Pizzaface continue to lend us their oven every other Saturday morning, allowing us to produce a batch of bread to sell to the local community. Weβve started selling the bread at the fabulous community cafΓ©, The Hive, between 12 and 1pm on alternate Saturdays. As we are conscious not to create unnecessary food waste, weβll be baking to order, with bread being picked up and paid for at the Hive Cafe in Stoneham Park. If youβre interested in buying bread from us then weβll have an order form in the Hive, or you can email orders to us onΒ orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk.Β We’llΒ be baking pain de campagne (sourdough), seeded malthouse and lightΒ rye loaves every time, with the occasional special loaf supplementing our offer. The first bake in February will be on the 7thΒ February, with bakes being fortnightly from that point.
Starting at the beginning of this month, Stoneham Bakehouse has begun an excitingΒ project with Hove Junior School to use baking to support children and staff’s wellbeing. The Play Dough project will work with targeted groups of children from both the Portland Road and Holland Road sites;Β teaching them baking skills, as well as focussing on the NewΒ EconomicsΒ Foundation’sΒ 5 Ways to Wellbeing (connect, give, take notice, be active, and keep learning). So, to give an example, we have been working with different types of dough to help us connect with our senses.Β The project, funded by a grant from the local ClinicalΒ CommissioningΒ Group, will last for the whole of 2015, enabling Stoneham Bakehouse to support many children over the year. We are also looking for Β funding to allow us to takeΒ the Play Dough project to local preschools and nurseries.
2015 looks like being a defining year for Stoneham Bakehouse. We are in the process of incorporating as a Community Interest Company, and we’re continuing to move forward on the plan for a permanent home on Stoneham Road. We’d like to say a big thank you to all who have supported the project so far; whether through buying bread, volunteering to bake, or talking about the project with friends, we really appreciate your help in making the dream of a Poets’ Corner community supported bakery a reality.

Play Dough Wellbeing Project
Stoneham Bakehouse has recently started a projectΒ with Hove Junior School. With funding help from the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group,Β we have created a series of workshops that will use breadmaking to support the wellbeing ofΒ pupils and staff alike. The Play Dough project will continue throughout 2015, enabling us to allowΒ many children to benefit from the positive wellbeing effects ofΒ breadmaking and working with dough. Each group of children will get a seriesΒ of six sessions, which have been designed to link breadmaking skills to the fiveΒ ways to wellbeing outlined in the New EconomicsΒ Foundation’s (2011) reportΒ Five Ways to Well-being: New applications, new ways of thinking. The five themes see us focus on connecting, being active, taking notice, keeping learning, and giving our bread to others.
The community aspect of the bakehouse also continues to develop through a project we have recently received funding for. A grant from the local Healthy Neighbourhood fund willΒ enable us to provide bread and healthy food workshops to local nurseries and playgroups. If you know of any such groups who would like to be involved in this project please get in touch.

December News Update
The last few weeks haveΒ been big ones for Stoneham Bakehouse; we’ve had our first community bakes, sold bread to the people of Poets’ Corner and made links with other local businesses. Read on to find out more.
On November the 29th we had our first community bake. It was great to get together with fiveΒ enthusiasticΒ supporters and bake using the oven at Pizzaface on Coleridge Street. Arriving at half seven in the morning, we baked until just before midday, before taking breads away and sharing them with our neighbours. We’ve another bake happening on the 20th December, with it becoming a fortnightly bake in the new year.
The first Saturday of the monthΒ saw Stoneham Bakehouse selling bread at the Stoneham Park Christmas Market. It was great to see so many people there;Β coming for a chat, buying bread and generally being supportive about the project. We sold a good amount of bread (baked by a number of the first batch of volunteers), with the Stollen Buns being particularly popular!
It has been a busy end to 2014 for the Stoneham Bakehouse team,Β and I’ve been blown away by your enthusiasm for the project. 2015 looks like being an exciting one, with the prospect of a community bakery being firmly established in Poets’ Corner by the end of the year. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you and to wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas!
