Baking for Wellbeing

This week has been Men’s Health Week, and throughout the week there has been much in the press and online about men’s health issues, and particularly the fact that men find it difficult to talk about their mental health. It’s so important that men, and women of course, feel able to ask for help and support when it comes to their wellbeing. I have found that talking about my health issues with family, friends, and people in the community has been of great help to me. Far from people judging me, everyone has been amazingly supportive and their ability to listen to what I have to say, along with recognising my depression myself, has been crucial to me being able to begin the journey to recovery.

Simon and doughMany of you may know, but I came to the Bakehouse from a background of leaving my teaching career due to stress and depression. After a dark period, baking bread, and particularly the physicality of working the dough and producing something that others appreciated, was a crucial part of my beginning to manage my depression. For me, the very act of kneading dough, noticing how it changes in feel, waiting for it to rise, and finally taking your creation from the oven, can be a very mindful one. As Stoneham Bakehouse has developed and become a reality, I still find that the time spent baking is therapeutic.

It’s not just me who thinks this. The Real Bread Campaign, who we are avid supporters of, produced a report outlining the therapeutic benefits of working with dough. Nearer to home; many of our volunteers see the time spent baking for the community of benefit to their wellbeing, enabling them to make connections with their community, take time out of their busy lives, and learn new skills.balling upAs Stoneham Bakehouse grows, we will continue to ensure that we are a group which is for the community; a place where you can benefit from the therapeutic powers of bread and breadmaking, a place which is good for your wellbeing, for the community’s wellbeing.

June Update

The Bakehouse project has progressed well over the last month. May has seen us having a stall at a Farmers’ Market, launching a new baking and wellbeing project, running a breadmaking workshop, even appearing in the Guardian!

breadtalkWe started the month by launching a new wellbeing project in conjunction with Impact Initatives at St John’s Cafe and Centre on Palmeira Square, Hove. Funded by a grant from the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership this project is aimed at men over the age of 50 and focuses on breadmaking as a mindful act, encouraging participants to be active and connect with other members of the group.

We’re continuing to have a pick up point for our bread atΒ The Hive, with ordered breads able to be picked up between 12 and 1pm on alternate Saturdays, as well as on Fridays 3-4pm.Β  We’llΒ be baking pain de campagne (sourdough), seeded malthouse, white tin and lightΒ rye loaves every bake, with bagels and the #fridaybun available on Fridays.Β  If you’re interested in buying bread from us then we’ll have an order form in the Hive, or you can email orders to us on orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk. To see when we’re baking, and what you can order, you can visit our buy bread page.Β Β  Our bagels continue to be a popular choice on the menu at The Hive. So why not go down and treat yourself to a lunch one day.

farmers market (2)Our stall at Hove Farmers’ Market last month was a real success. Thank you to all of you who came along and said hello, it was a good opportunity to get our bread to more of the community, and talk about the project. We’ll be having a stall at the next Farmers’ Market on the 20th June, and will be regular stallholders as the market returns to St Philip’s Church Hall on the 3rd Saturday of every month.

everyday breadWe have also ran our first couple of Everyday Bread workshops. Participants arrived at 10am and left at 2pm with the breads they had made, and recipes to continue their breadmaking journey. During the workshop we explored a variety of techniques to help bake bread successfully, enjoyed a light lunch, and had the chance to connect with members of the community.Β  We are running this workshop again on Tuesday 7th July, and are looking to repeat it again in the coming months. If you’d like to come along, either visit our website or email workshops@stonehambakehouse.org.uk for further details or to book a place (Β£50 fee includes the lunch and recipes).

Everyday Bread

An introduction to breadmaking workshop

In this workshop we’ll look at basic breadmaking techniques, and simple recipes for baking everyday bread. The session will take you through the kneading, fermenting and proving processes, and give tips to help you bake a successful loaf each time. Suitable for beginnners or those who have baked a bit of bread at home; we’ll make two doughs during the workshop, producing different loaves and rolls to eat and take home. A light lunch will be provided to accompany the bread we’ll make. You will also receive copies of the recipes to take home, so you can continue to learn in your own kitchen.
The workshop will run between 10am and 2pm. It will be held at Hungry Monkey on Stoneham Road, and places will cost Β£50. Places are limited to 4 people per session. If you would like to book a place on the workshop, or want to express an interest in future workshops please email workshops@stonehambakehouse.org.uk. Alternatively, you can visit our workshops page and book your placee online.
